The Greek cuisine is as rich as the Greek heritage and offers an incredibly luscious and diverse array of dishes that are the products of nearly eons of cooking, of evolving and of living and eating, for the Greek cuisine is one of the oldest and the one of the most incredibly rich ones that is still evolving and thriving. The Greek cuisine shares a hoard of its features with various other regions and cuisines, like that of turkey, the Balkans, Italy and the Levant. With the Greek cuisine, one thing is quite remarkable. Most of its cooking methods, recipes and ingredients have survived the test of time and has even managed to remain as unscathed as possible as most of the cooking methods remain the same. When it comes to the Greek cuisine olive oil is used extensively, along with wine bread, grains, herbs and various types of meats that include the pork the rabbit and the poultry. The variety of the Greek cuisine is afforded by the long tradition and the flavors of these dishes have evolved and modified in pleasing manners as a result of the changes in the season and the geographical changes that one can observe throughout Greece. The Greece cuisine can even be considered to be the forerunner of the entire western cuisine. It has had a great influence on the cuisines of a wide range of countries including Rome and all through Europe and in some cases even past Europe. However, even the Greek cuisine in itself has a great amount of influence from the cuisines of a diverse number of people, for the Greek have interacted with a wide range of people over their long standing tradition that spans through centuries. The Greek cuisine can be considered to have had its advent over 4000 years back. The basic elements of the rudimentary Greek cuisine was the wine, olive oil, meat, wheat and the fish of which the meat was not consumed or cooked as often as the fish was. As is the case with any other cuisine, the eating habits and the trends dictated by the Greek cuisine slowly changed with progress and technological advancement. However, one thing has not changed. The dominance of wine and olive oil in the Greek cuisine still remains the same. Some of the important or rather signature Greek items include the cheese, the eggplant, the olives and the yogurt. Most of these dishes are used in the preparation of Greek desserts which are rich in taste and composition and has a large amount of honey and nuts in them. The importance and the dominance of the Olive oil in the Greek cuisine is a direct result of the fact that a predominant number of trees throughout Greece produce olive oil and thus has come to define the distinctive taste of Greek food. Speaking of Greek food, we come to the basic form of grain that one might find in any given Greek cuisine. Wheat and barley are some of the dominant Grains that one might find to be used in any given menu that flaunts the Greek cuisine. To add flavor and taste to these grains are the vegetables that one might find to be used in a large amount in the Greek cuisine. The usual veggies are the tomato, eggplant, potato, green beans, green peppers, onions and okra. To sweeten things up is the Honey which is produced by most of the citrus trees such aspine honey from conifer trees, bitter orange trees, thyme honey, lemon, and orange. TheGreek cuisine employs quite an array of spices for the flavorings the usual spices that one might find used in the Greek cuisine are: garlic, onion, bay laurel leaves, dill oregano, and mint. However in some cases the many dishes in the Greek cuisine also uses fennel seed basil, thyme andPersilladewhich is used to garnish some dishes. Many Greek recipes use some of the spices with the meat for sweetening it. Other than their meat and their spices, the Greek are renowned for their appetizers which include the "tiganita" which is an array of deep fried vegetables the likes of zucchini,courgettes, aubergines, peppers and mushrooms. A similar blend of taste can be experienced in the Dakos, which is basically a cretan salad that is made up of a slice of soaked dried bread which is topped with and crumbled fetachopped tomatoes. Some of the other famous and typical Greek appetizers that one might find in any restaurants that offers Greek cuisine are the Fava, Garides, Gavros, Greek salad, Horta, Kolokythakia, kalamarakia, koukies, kolokythoanothoi which is Zucchini flowers that is filled with rice or in some cases cheese and herbs. There are also the fava beans, cabbage salad with finely shredded cabbage with some salt, olive oil, lemon juice and vinegar dressing, croquettes , and maridestiganites which is a deep-fried whitebait, that is typically served with lemon wedges. Some of the other appetizers which are usually hard to come across in most Greek restaurants in cludes the variants in the Melitzanes, the Melitzanosalata, the eggplant salads that are prepared in a manner that resembles the potato salad the pantzarosalata which is basically a beetroot salad that is given a tad bit of olive oil and vinegar, the patatosalata which is a typical potato salad with olive oil with some finely sliced onions,lemon juice or vinegar and mayonnaise. While the aforementioned dishes are the ones that one might not come across quite often even in Greek restaurants there are the popular ones which one just can’‘t miss if they’‘re to have the complete Greek experience when it comes to the cuisine. When it comes to meat and seafood dishes the Greek cuisine offers quite an exquisite choice of dishes that includes the Apaki which is a renowned Cretan specialty that is made out the lean pork, maintained in vinegar. The pork is the smoked in the shrubs and many aromatic herbs, following which it is packed in Salts. The Greek cuisine, like the French is quite rich in its selection of cheese and includes quite a selection of it which includes Feta, Kasseri, Halloumi, Kefalotyri, Kefalograviera, Graviera, Myzithra, Anthotyros, Formaela, Manouri, and Metsovone. To end with, the list of desserts that one finds in the Greek cuisine too is very rich and includes the likes of the pasteli which can be found in a large number of varieties, the finikia, the baklava, the diples and the Halva. The list of mouth-watering desserts that make up for the richness and the popularity of the Greek cuisine amongst both the kids and the adults is quite extensive and a result of long-lasting enhancements and innovations in the food industry. As a result the number of takers to the Greek cuisine has been on the constant rise throughout the world, as more and more people become aware of the exquisite and luscious selection of food items that the Greek cuisine has to offer, the more the cuisine innovates. The Greek, like in most of their endeavors have excelled even in the culinary field and have mastered the art of gaining the perfect blend of flavors in their dishes over the years.
